The original backend had grown organically with the product. Releases were risky, audit requirements were ticked off by hand and every new integration made the system more fragile.

We introduced a clear service boundary around the payment and ledger domains, rebuilt the integration layer behind a documented API and made the audit trail a first-class part of the design. The migration ran incrementally behind feature flags.
